Are laptops really meant for games? Even if you throw lots of money at them like a madman can they still be on par with desktop PCs in terms of game performance? I have a dilemma here on whether I should buy a gaming laptop or regular one and leave all the gaming up to my PC.
If you're always mobile frequently, I suggest you buy laptop, otherwise stick to desktop. Desktop capability is higher than laptop, easily to upgrade, and also cheaper

Gaming laptops are much more expensive than their desktop counterparts, and they tend to get very hot very quickly. If you want performance, you'd be much better off choosing a desktop computer.
That would also leave more room for upgradability and make maintenance to the computers hardward much easier.

they can be just as good at gaming as desktop pc's in this day and age. The problems are that they're more expensive doing so, and not as easy to upgrade graphics cards and such

Go to alienware.com you will find everything you need there. From laptops to desktops. Great gaming machines! You wont find better. They are pretty spendy so read up on them and see what a refurb is going for on ebay or another online market place. I own a alienware Area 51 m17x laptop and it is amazing! Intel Core 2, High def video and audio. Amazing graphics card, and you can customize them how you want! For real check them out.

Desktop computers are more suited to gaming than laptops. They can be upgraded better and cheaper as well as have less issues overheating. Most gamers that go to lans accept this in exchange for performance and cheapness.

If you're in school, a laptop is always a great idea because of the general mobility and functionality.
However, if you're looking for straight up power through money. go with a desktop.
i personally bought a laptop because i need it for school. You can get the high end performance of a desk top within a laptop, but it will cost you plenty more money.

For playing latest 3D games I would suggest to go for a desktop with an ASUS high end motherboard and minimum 2 GB RAM. Don't forget to get a good 3D Graphic Card (nVidia, GEForce or Radeon) for best performance. Still your budget will be quiet less as compared to a gaming Laptop and you'll get better performance.
If playing games is your only concern you can consider Microsoft XBox also
