I've got a two year old Dell with a crappy x1400 ati mobility card, and it plays half life 2 just fine. NOt high resolutions, but very playable, so you don't need a 2000.00 computer. Mine was outdated when I bought it for 1400.00. Go for a system with high resolution 1400x900 and a dedicated video card with 512 to 1gb of dedicated Ram. If it has a 2.2 or above Dual core and 2+ ram you should be able to game quite nicely.

I know your looking for a dell, and Dell laptops are ok, but over priced for their configurations. Think about ASUS. They have some OK gaming machines right at 1k.

Everex StepNote XT5000T Laptop Computer
"Excellent performance on games for the price. I can play Tabula Rasa and Enemy Territory Quake Wars betas on medium/low settings without a hitch. Tabula Rasa lagged sometimes because it would take my memory usage beyond the available 1GB. Counter Strike Source works on High settings, and almost max (AA and AF) on some maps. So you can expect to play most new and upcoming games on low/medium and old games on high, using the amazing 1440x900 resolution."
Great Price, awesome specs. Dedicated Video card, 17" screen and everything else you need, on top of fine performance. the additional slot for another hard drive is handy and the fact that it ships with an empty slot for another stick of ram allows for an easy upgrade to to 2GB.

This question has been asked almost as often as the one about "Is such and such a genuine lottery because they say I've won some money!". What is it about laptops, you have people who purport to be computer experts saying things like Toshiba 964782b25x is awesome esp. with vista and it is just bollocks, none of these people have run any FPS on a laptop because they just won't go. They read the specs and think wow! and I admit that laptops have become more powerful in recent times but they are NOT designed for hardcore gaming, they can run a movie in the corner of the screen while you do word or something. FPS's need a huge fan and heat sink to keep the CPU cool for starters, and laptops just don't have that. You might be able to install the game and crank it up but the second you have more than 2 characters or a big explosion the thing will freeze up and over time will fry the motherboard. Get a desktop, they might not be as cool or portable as a laptop but even the cheapest is way better than the best laptop and certainly better than you will get for the money you are talking! At least you will be able to play games. As for my creds, well I have none but I wouldn't want you to blow your cash and be disappointed.

not just AMD athlon
the perfomance of a machine doesnt solely depend on the processor, for example for gaming, i recommend windows Xp SP2, 2.5ghz and upwards, 1gb ram and upwards, 1gb graphic card and upwards,(nvidia)
and a sound blaster card, can be 512mb,
